Choosing colors is one of my favorite parts of the illustration process. Before I start creating the final artwork, I usually build a color palette first. This helps me define the mood of a collection, make sure all illustrations work well together, and create a cohesive visual style.

Whether I am designing greeting cards, seamless patterns, or artwork for products, I find that starting with a clear color direction makes the creative process much easier.

Most of my color palettes include around 8–12 colors. Alongside the main colors, I usually add lighter and darker variations, as well as supporting shades like off-white or black. These additional colors give me more flexibility when creating the final illustrations while keeping the overall look cohesive.

For this post, I’m sharing the five key colors that define each collection and create its overall mood. These are the main colors that immediately communicate the feeling and story behind the artwork.

The colors I choose are often influenced by the theme of the collection, current design trends, and the audience the artwork is created for. For example, baby illustrations often benefit from softer pastel tones, while birthday designs can be brighter and more playful.

Here are five recent illustration collections and the color palettes that inspired them.

1. Sweet Love – A Modern Valentine’s Day Color Palette

Mood: Romantic, playful, and sweet

For my Sweet Love collection, I wanted to create a cheerful Valentine’s Day feeling using a combination of classic love-inspired colors.

Red and pink are natural choices for Valentine’s designs, but using different shades helps create more depth. I combined brighter reds with softer pink tones to create a palette that feels warm, playful, and full of love.

The cherries also gave me the opportunity to introduce green tones through the stems and leaves, which add contrast and balance to the warmer shades.

2. Slam Dunk: A Sporty and Energetic Palette

Mood: Bold, dynamic, and fun

When designing themed collections, I often look at the subject itself for color inspiration. For my Slam Dunk collection, the bright orange of a basketball became the starting point for the palette.

I combined orange with blue and red accents to create a strong contrast and a feeling of energy. These colors help communicate the excitement and movement associated with sports.

3. New Baby Dreamland: A Soft Pastel Palette

Mood: Gentle, dreamy, and joyful

For baby illustrations, I usually choose colors that create a soft and welcoming feeling. The New Baby Dreamland collection uses pastel shades of orange, blue, yellow, and green.

While pastel colors are often associated with baby designs, adding several different colors keeps the collection playful and cheerful. The softer tones create a calm feeling while still making the artwork feel bright and happy.

4. Shangri La Gardens: A Botanical Palette

Mood: Fresh, peaceful, and nature-inspired

For my Shangri La Gardens collection, I wanted to create the feeling of a place you would love to move to. A home surrounded by plants, cozy corners, and beautiful outdoor spaces.

Since these illustrations were created as new home greeting cards, the goal was to capture a sense of comfort and relaxation. I imagined a dream garden where you could spend slow afternoons by the pool, relax among plants, or curl up in a cozy corner of your home.

The palette is built around the color blue, which create a calm and refreshing feeling. The blue tones connect the different spaces in the illustrations, from a pool scene surrounded by greenery to interior details like carpets and home accessories.

To bring warmth and personality into the designs, I added pink and yellow as accent colors. These brighter shades appear in details like cushions, umbrellas, and other small elements, creating contrast and making the spaces feel playful and lived-in.

5. Little Circus: A Playful Birthday Color Palette

Mood: Cheerful, colorful, and full of celebration

For my Little Circus collection, I wanted to create a fun and joyful atmosphere inspired by the excitement of a circus celebration.

When thinking about circus colors, red and white were an obvious starting point. These classic colors immediately create a connection to circus tents, performances, and the traditional circus aesthetic.

However, for a baby birthday collection, I wanted the palette to feel softer, more playful, and full of happiness. I expanded the color palette with pink, green, yellow, and orange to add more variety and create a cheerful celebration feeling.

The additional colors helped the illustrations feel more lively and child-friendly while keeping the recognizable circus-inspired look. The combination of warm and bright colors creates a palette that feels energetic, playful, and perfect for celebrating a special birthday.

Why I Create a Color Palette Before Illustrating

Creating the color palette is one of my first steps when starting a new illustration collection.

Having the colors decided beforehand helps me:

• Create quick color drafts to make sure that the colors work well together

• Create a consistent look across multiple illustrations

• Make sure each design feels like part of the same collection

• Choose colors that match the intended audience and theme

• Work more efficiently during the illustration process

For my commercial illustration work, including greeting cards and licensed artwork, creating cohesive collections is especially important. A strong color direction helps the artwork feel connected across different designs and products.

Final Thoughts

A color palette can completely change the mood of an illustration. The same theme can feel playful, elegant, cozy, or modern depending on the colors you choose.

For me, creating a palette is not just a practical step before drawing. It is where the personality of a collection starts to develop.
